Indonesia may triple its visa-on-arrival fees

Indonesia is considering tripling its visa-on-arrival fees as part of efforts to promote 'quality tourism,' with discussions ongoing under Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno.

Discussions are currently underway within the Indonesian government about a possible hike in visa-on-arrival fees. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno recently confirmed that debates continue and that a significant increase—potentially tripling current fees—could be considered.

At present, Indonesia’s visa-on-arrival (or visitor e-Visa) costs 500,000 IDR (€23.86) and is valid for 30 days. The visa is widely accessible, as it is available to travelers from 92 countries and may be extended once for an additional 30 days at an extra cost. This makes it one of the most accessible visa-on-arrival schemes in the world.

While acknowledging rumors of a potential fee increase, Mr. Uno stressed that any adjustment would align with rates in other countries offering similar visa categories. He emphasized the government’s goal of promoting “quality tourism” and underscored the importance of collaboration across all levels of government to achieve it.

The debate over increasing visa-on-arrival fees comes after Indonesia recently abolished its visa-free travel program for 159 countries. Only travelers from ASEAN member states may now enter without a visa. However, this legislative shift was largely anticipated, as the visa-free program had been suspended since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This does not mean that Indonesia is closed to tourists. In fact, when borders reopened in February 2022, tourists were able to enter using the paid visa-on-arrival. The formal abolition of visa-free travel merely formalizes what was already in practice.

For travelers planning a trip to Bali or anywhere in Indonesia, the electronic visa remains the most suitable choice for most holidaymakers and short-term visitors. Travelers can obtain their visa on arrival when landing at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport or apply and pay for the e-Visa up to 48 hours before arrival. The visa is available to citizens of 92 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., and most European nations.
