Israel Joins U.S. Visa Waiver Program Early
Israel enters the U.S. Visa Waiver Program early, allowing citizens visa-free travel for up to 90 days amid Israel-Hamas conflict, easing entry rules.
In light of the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, the United States activated the Israel Visa Waiver Program on Thursday, October 19, allowing citizens seeking to visit the U.S. for 90 days or less to enter without needing to apply for a visa.
On September 27, the U.S. announced Israel would join the Visa Waiver Program, adding it to a select group of 40 countries, primarily in Europe and Asia, whose citizens can visit the U.S. for up to three months without a visa requirement.
Original Implementation Date Set for the Program
Initially, it was stated that Israelis would be able to travel to the U.S. without visas starting November 30. However, Israel faced challenges meeting the reciprocity requirement, essentially ensuring all American citizens—including Palestinian Americans—are treated equally when traveling to or transiting through Israel.
Early Rollout of the Visa Waiver Program
Following these complications, the Visa Waiver Program was implemented early to grant Israelis simplified access to the U.S. This decision reflects the strong and close relations between the two countries, despite hurdles posed by the reciprocity requirement.
Benefits for Israeli Travelers
Ease of travel: Israelis no longer need to apply for a visa to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days. An ESTA is all that’s required!
Time savings: Administrative procedures are significantly streamlined, saving considerable time for travelers.
Cost savings: Visa fees are no longer applicable for these short-term trips, providing financial relief for Israeli travelers.
