Japan Launches eVisa for U.S. and Canadian Travelers

Japan’s new eVisa aims to attract North American tourists and streamline entry, offering a 90-day stay for Canadians and Americans. Learn about ERFS certificates, application steps, and requirements.

Japan’s government has moved to ease entry formalities for visitors by introducing an electronic visa system. The initiative is designed both to attract tourists and reduce the administrative burden on embassies and consulates. Under the new rules, an online visa for Japan became available starting on August 18, 2022. The system is currently open to citizens of Canada and the United States.

Who qualifies for Japan’s e-Visa from the U.S. or Canada?

Travelers residing in Canada or the United States may apply for the electronic visa to Japan, but must meet specific conditions. Applicants must be traveling as part of an organized tour group. Tourist and business visitors alike are also required to secure an ERFS certificate.

Known as the Entrant Registration and Follow-up System certificate, this document confirms that the applicant has completed Japan’s entry and follow-up registration process. It can be issued by a host organization in Japan or a travel agency. The ERFS certificate must be uploaded during the Japan e-Visa application. Family visitors—those visiting relatives—are exempt from the ERFS requirement but must instead submit proof of family ties and an invitation letter.

Proof of kinship may include a marriage certificate or birth record, while applicants must also hold a valid Canadian or U.S. passport and provide a digital photograph. Parents applying on behalf of a minor must supply evidence of parental consent.

How Japan’s e-Visa works

Canadian and U.S. nationals can apply for the Japan e-Visa through an official digital portal. Applicants begin by completing the online application, which collects personal information and key passport data. Travel details—prior to uploading necessary supporting documents—must also be provided. Once submitted, the applicant pays the required processing fee at the nearest Japanese diplomatic mission.

Successful applicants receive an email notification confirming that their e-Visa request is under review. Upon approval, a digital copy of the e-Visa grant notice is sent via email. Travelers may then present their digital visa along with their passport to board flights bound for Japan.

The Japanese e-Visa grants stays of up to 90 consecutive days. Should visitors wish to extend their stay beyond three months, they must submit a separate visa application through the appropriate Japanese diplomatic or consular mission.
