Laos Expands Visa-Free Entry for Chinese and European Travelers
Discover how Laos is reviving its tourism sector with new visa exemptions for Chinese tourists and select Europeans under the Visit Laos 2024 initiative.
As part of its ambitious Visit Laos 2024 programme, Laos has recently announced a significant loosening of its visa policy, designed to attract more international visitors. This move is part of a broader strategy to revitalise the country’s tourism industry, which is vital to its economy.
A strategic effort to boost tourism
In response to the need to restart its tourism sector, which was severely impacted by the global pandemic, Laos has launched several attractive reforms under the Visit Laos 2024 campaign. These measures, effective since 1 July 2024, include visa facilitation aimed at encouraging foreign visitors to explore the country’s cultural and natural riches.
Visa exemptions for Chinese tourists
Chinese tourists travelling in groups organised by registered agencies can now benefit from a visa exemption for stays of up to 15 days. The measure also applies to visitors from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Groups must be led by tour operators officially recognised by the Lao Ministry of Tourism.
The exemption applies only to stays not exceeding 15 days.
For longer trips, a visa must be obtained on arrival or online, valid for a single entry of up to 60 days.
Extended stays for certain European countries
Citizens of eight European countries now enjoy visa-free entry for an initial 15-day stay in Laos. The change covers:
Denmark
Norway
Finland
Sweden
Austria
Belgium
Spain
Greece
These measures aim to strengthen Laos’ appeal to Europeans, fostering loyalty among first-time visitors who may become ambassadors for the country.
Extended visa policies for other nationalities
Multiple-entry visas for Australia, New Zealand and others
Laos has also introduced multiple-entry visas for visitors from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia and the United Kingdom. The initial 30-day single-entry visa period has been extended to 60 days per stay with a validity of up to five years.
Thai tourist groups
In a continued push for openness, Laos has further eased conditions for its immediate neighbours. Thai tourists in groups accompanied by passports or temporary border passes are now allowed to stay for up to 10 days, increased from three. They may also access three adjacent provinces from their point of entry.
Targeting with “Visit Laos 2024”
The Visit Laos 2024 programme not only showcases the country’s tourism potential but actively promotes local entrepreneurship and its unique cultural wealth. The government is banking on these initiatives to position Laos as a premier destination for travellers seeking authentic experiences.
By adopting a policy of openness and streamlining entry procedures, Laos hopes to attract more than 4.6 million foreign visitors this year, generating around US$1.3 billion in tourism revenue. The 35% increase in international arrivals between January and April already signals a promising outlook for the sector.
