Libya Moves Forward with eVisa Rollout

Tripoli hosts key meeting on eVisa implementation as Libya accelerates plans—first outlined in 2021 with IBM—to modernize travel and boost tourism and investment.

A meeting between Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Department of Passports and Nationality in late June advanced the country’s plans to introduce an electronic visa submission system.

Under the agreement, a nationwide eVisa platform will be deployed in line with proposals from the Passport Authority, alongside updated fee schedules and operational rules for both paper-based and electronic visa issuance. The initiative was first launched in 2021 and the government signed a contract with IBM.

The new system specifies that only Libyan diplomatic missions abroad—embassies and consulates—will be permitted to accept documents (paper or digital) and issue visas, following coordination protocols set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Passport Authority.

eVisa: a Game-Changer for Libyan Travel

As part of efforts to revive its tourism sector and attract foreign investment, Libya is moving ahead with its electronic visa, or eVisa. The new system is designed to streamline travel paperwork, reduce bureaucracy, and project a more welcoming image to international visitors. The Libyan eVisa allows travelers to apply and obtain their visa entirely online, eliminating the need to visit a Libyan embassy or consulate in person.

Applicants will simply fill out an online form on the dedicated portal, pay the visa fee by credit or debit card, and upon approval, receive their eVisa via email. Travelers must print and present the eVisa at Libyan border control upon arrival.

Driving Economic Recovery Under the National Unity Government

This upcoming eVisa initiative aligns with the National Unity Government’s broader push to rebuild Libya and normalize conditions after years of civil conflict. By modernizing entry processes, the eVisa aims to position Libya as a competitive destination for both tourism and business, helping to stimulate local economies and strengthen international ties. Easier access is expected to draw foreign investors and encourage multinational firms to establish operations in the country. The rollout underscores the government’s commitment to modernization and economic development.

Tourism and Travel Poised for Growth in Libya

Reviving Libya’s tourism industry is a key priority for the government, seen as vital to diversifying the economy and creating jobs. With world-class archaeological sites, sweeping deserts, and rich historical heritage, Libya is primed to attract adventurous travelers and culture seekers. Since the National Unity Government took office, several countries have lifted travel restrictions to Libya, reflecting growing international confidence in the country’s security and stability. The eVisa is expected to reinforce this positive trend by making travel arrangements to Libya faster, simpler, and more transparent.
