Malaysia has joined over 25 countries offering remote worker visas, allowing digital nomads to live and work legally in the country while promoting tourism.

Another Southeast Asian country has added remote work to its policy agenda. Malaysia is now offering a digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to live and work legally in the country.

Does Malaysia offer digital nomad visas?

Malaysia is now issuing visas for digital professionals. The laissez-passer-style permit grants remote workers the legal right to work outside the country while residing within its borders.

Malaysia joins more than 25 countries already offering a digital nomad visa. The formal program was introduced to boost tourism in Malaysia.

Who qualifies for Malaysia’s digital nomad visa?

The digital nomad visa is available to professionals earning an annual income of at least 24,000 USD. Digital nomad visa application fees are approximately 220 USD. Eligible professions include marketers, developers, copywriters, tech specialists, and IT professionals.

Applicants must present a valid work contract of three months or less. If applying with a partner and/or children, additional fees of 1,100 USD apply.

How long is the Malaysia digital nomad visa valid?

According to the Malaysian government agency responsible for promoting digital work and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, the digital nomad visa will begin to be issued from 1 October and is valid for 365 days.

Freelancers collaborating with Malaysian or international companies can work freely under this visa. The remote work visa is renewable once.

Alternatively, applicants may choose a low-cost business visa—around 200 USD—which allows stays of up to six months with possible extensions.
