eApp to replace CRPP for welcoming refugees in Canada
Canada replaces the criticized CRPP with the new eApp system, designed to better support refugees through an accessible and intuitive digital platform.
Canada is one of the countries opening its doors to refugees around the world. To streamline access, the Canadian government has introduced eApp to replace the CRPP, which has faced heavy criticism.
The CRPP and its limitations
The Canadian Refugee Protection Portal (CRPP) launched in October 2021 was discontinued prematurely due to significant flaws. Its designers overlooked the challenges refugees and immigration consultants might face during the process.
Many asylum seekers come from unstable countries affected by war or economic crises. They are often traumatized physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Moreover, most lack internet access and are not familiar with digital tools.
Under the CRPP, refugees were not eligible for work permits. Another major issue was the requirement to provide exact dates for travel and relocation—details impossible for refugees to supply.
eApp: Canada's new refugee processing system replacing CRPP
Less than a year after the CRPP launch, eApp was introduced on September 13, 2022. This new system better meets the needs of all stakeholders in Canada’s immigration process. Unlike before, refugees can now complete their applications over multiple sessions, taking up to 90 days from the date the application opens.
Designed for accessibility, eApp features an intuitive interface. Immigration agents can now communicate more effectively with clients, their legal representatives, and advisors. Applicants can also track their application status in real time.
