Mozambique launches e-Visa for 183 countries, simplifying travel

This is the news that will change the game for Southern Africa tourism in 2026. If you’ve ever given up on a trip to Mozambique due to administrative hurdles (or endless queues at land borders), rejoice: the country is making a giant leap into the digital age.
The Mozambican government, in partnership with VFS Global, has officially launched its new E-Visa platform—now open to travelers from 183 countries.
What does this mean? Nearly all travelers—whether they’re coming from India, Europe, or the Americas—can now secure a visa entirely online without stepping foot in an embassy, as the entire application process is now digital.
What’s changing in February 2026
Until now, Mozambique had already relaxed entry rules. Since March 1, 2023, 29 countries have been exempt from visa requirements, including European nationals. Travelers from these countries can visit for up to 30 days without a visa, with the option to extend their stay by an additional 30 days. To do so, travelers must obtain an electronic travel authorization and pay a fee of 650 MZN (approximately 8.56€).
The announced goal—highlighted at the National Conference on Digital Transformation in Maputo—is to make Mozambique an immigration “paperless” destination.
Here are the three key reforms:
Universality: Eligible travelers from 183 countries.
Fully digital process: Elimination of paper forms at borders or passports held at embassies. Everything is processed online and completed before travel.
Security and speed: The system helps reduce congestion at border crossings—particularly at Maputo Airport and land borders with South Africa—by enabling pre-validation at point of travel.
How it works
The streamlined process is accessible via the official portal evisa.gov.mz. Here’s how to apply:
1. Complete the online form (passport details, flight, and accommodation information).
2. Upload scanned documents (passport, photo, proof of funds).
3. Pay visa fees directly via credit card (Visa/Mastercard accepted).
4. Receive your E-Visa (PDF/QR code) via email.
While the system is automated, travelers are advised to submit their application at least 3–5 business days prior to departure to avoid potential delays.
Preparing your application
Before traveling, ensure your passport remains valid for at least six months. A recent passport photo will be required for smooth processing.
Depending on travel purpose (tourism, business, sports or culture), additional documents may be requested, such as proof of funds, hotel reservations, a letter of invitation, or an exit ticket.
E-Visa vs. ETA: what’s the difference?
It’s important not to confuse this new E-Visa (Electronic Visa) with visa-exempt arrangements.
Travelers who are citizens of exempt countries—including some within the SADC or the original 29 listed—do not need to apply for a visa under certain conditions. However, travelers from these countries may still be required to submit an electronic travel authorization and pay the associated fee for entry.
For the 29 visa-exempt countries, a mandatory electronic travel authorization is required prior to arrival for stays up to 30 days.
