If you’re planning travel from Brazil to Cancún, Mexico City or Tulum, entry rules have just been eased. The move is designed to streamline travel between the two countries.

What’s changing — back to simplicity
Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) has officially reactivated the Electronic Authorization System for holders of Brazilian passports. In practice, this ends the need for a physical visa (requiring a consulate appointment and stamp in the passport) for the vast majority of tourists.
Key points to remember:
Affected travelers: Brazilian citizens.r> New option: An E-Visa (electronic authorization) can now be obtained instead of a consular visa.r> Mandatory condition: Entry to Mexico is permitted only by air using this authorization.
Eligibility conditions
The measure aims to facilitate short-term tourism and business travel, but includes strict rules that must be followed to avoid boarding refusal.
1. Mode of transport
This is the critical aspect of the reform: the electronic authorization is valid only if you land at a Mexican airport.
Entry by air: Electronic authorization accepted. Entry by land or sea: Physical consular visa remains mandatory.
2. Purpose of travel
The authorization covers multiple travel purposes, provided activities are unremunerated, including:
- Tourism and holidays
- Transit
- Business (meetings, conferences, supervision; no salary earned in Mexico).
3. Length of stay
The electronic authorization typically allows a single entry and permits stays up to 180 days.
How to get the Mexico E-Visa
The process is now fully digital. Follow these key steps to ensure the document’s validity:
Online form: Apply via the official portal.
Data entry: Enter information exactly as it appears on the Brazilian passport (mind accents and double surnames).
Processing time: Responses are typically very fast.
Print requirement: Once approved, the document must be printed. Airlines departing from Brazil require the paper version to permit boarding.
Important note: The SAE comes with a specific validity window for entry (often 30 days after issuance). Apply about 2 weeks before travel, not months in advance.
The electronic visa platform also remains open to nationals of Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Reminder: Who is completely exempt from visa requirements?
Certain Brazilian nationals need neither a physical nor an electronic visa. They enter Mexico simply by showing a valid passport, provided they hold:
- A valid visa or permanent residency for Canada, the United States, Japan or the United Kingdom.
- A valid visa or residency within the Schengen Area.
- Permanent residency in Chile, Colombia or Peru (members of the Pacific Alliance).
Other nationalities, including Europeans, may still qualify for visa-free entry under Mexico’s modernized procedures. A visa (electronic or paper) issued by a Mexican embassy may still be required for some nationalities. We strongly advise travelers to verify the correct entry requirement based on nationality and the validity of their travel documents.
