A reciprocal e-Visa between Mexico and Brazil
Brazil and Mexico agree to implement a mutual electronic visa system, eliminating the need for physical visas and simplifying travel between the two nations.
Brazil and Mexico have taken a major step forward in bilateral relations by moving to significantly ease travel between the two nations. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently announced an agreement with its Mexican counterpart to implement a mutual electronic visa system. The initiative aims to streamline tourism and business travel for citizens of both countries.
According to the agreement details, the traditional physical visa will no longer be required. Mexican and Brazilian travelers will thus avoid the often cumbersome process of visiting a consulate to obtain their documents. While the new system is not yet operational, Brazilian government sources have indicated it will be implemented in the coming months. While Mexicans did not previously require a visa, Brazilians had to visit an embassy to visit Mexico.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to exempt Brazilian and Mexican citizens from visa requirements for travel to each other’s countries. Mauro Vieira, Mexico’s foreign minister, highlighted the significance of the agreement by noting that Mexico would be the 2nd country—after Japan on 1 October 2023—to lift visa restrictions for Brazilian tourists.
An agreement years in the making
It’s worth noting that this agreement has been in development since April. It was negotiated in close coordination with Mexico’s foreign minister, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra. In an official statement during the 5th Brazil-Mexico Binational Commission meeting, the U.S. Department of State expressed optimism about the e-Visa’s effectiveness: “The joint adoption of e-Visas will allow Brazilian and Mexican citizens to apply for visitor visas for tourism and business in both countries quickly, safely, and without visiting consular offices.”
Historically, both countries have previously implemented electronic visa systems at various times. However, technical and administrative challenges had undermined their effectiveness. With this new initiative, the two nations hope to overcome these hurdles and provide their citizens with a smoother travel experience.
