South Africa Extends Visa Validity Amid Processing Backlog
The South African government has extended visa concessions until June 2024 to address severe processing delays, allowing individuals with pending applications to remain legally in the country.
The South African government has recently announced an extension until June 2024 of visa concessions for individuals with pending exemptions, new visa applications, and appeals. This measure aims to address the country’s significant backlog in visa processing, caused by a mounting queue of unprocessed applications.
Impact on Expired Visa Holders
This extension applies to those who submitted their applications before 30 November 2023, and whose visas have since expired. Their legal status will now be extended until 30 June 2024, allowing them to continue working, studying, or operating a business in line with the terms of their previous visa.
Eligibility Criteria for the Extension

Hold an expired visa
Agree to comply with the terms of the previous visa

Special Measures for 90-Day Tourist Visa Holders
For holders of 90-day visitor visas who applied for an extension before 30 November 2023 and whose applications were still pending as of 23 February 2024, they must now exit the Republic of South Africa on or before 29 February 2024.
Departure and Re-Entry Requirements
Extended-visa holders will be required to present a receipt proving their application was lodged when exiting and re-entering the country. Those who need a visa to return must submit their application before their departure.
South Africa’s Ongoing Visa Challenges
The current situation highlights the South African government’s persistent challenges in managing visa processing and applications. The backlog stems primarily from administrative delays, prompting these temporary measures to ease pressure on consular services.
