Sri Lanka Scraps ETA Requirement for Foreign Tourists

Sri Lanka has waived the ETA requirement for foreign tourists, effective immediately. Learn how to navigate new travel rules and optional online ETA procedures.

On Friday, October 31, 2025, Sri Lanka announced the removal of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for foreign tourists. The Ministry of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka published an official statement on its website. Earlier this month, authorities had announced that all foreign nationals would need to obtain an ETA before departing for and arriving in Sri Lanka. This decision has now been reversed.

Can You Still Get an ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization streamlines entry formalities upon arrival in Sri Lanka. While no longer mandatory, travelers may still apply online before departure to avoid queues at airport immigration. The process involves completing an online form with passport details, contact information, and travel itinerary.

Tourism and business visitors no longer need to secure an ETA before traveling, but the service remains available through the official portal at eta.gov.lk/slvisa. The ETA process is designed to be quick and straightforward—often processed immediately with approval sent to the email provided in the application. Tourists opting for the 30-day ETA gain two entries over six months. For single-entry convenience, choosing the basic ETA is recommended to ensure seamless border crossings.
