Thailand reinstates proof-of-funds requirement for tourist visas

Thai authorities now mandate e-Visa applicants to show proof of at least 700 € (20,000 THB) in available funds, bringing stricter financial checks back in line with standard entry procedures.

Effective May 2025, the Thai government has reinstated the requirement for tourist-visa applicants to submit proof of sufficient financial means. According to the official e-Visa portal, each candidate must now provide documentation certifying a minimum of 20,000 Thai baht (about 700 €).

Acceptable financial documents for an e-Visa

Accepted proof includes the past three months’ bank statements, or—if the trip is sponsored—a signed sponsorship letter from the supporting party. Pay slips or bank attestations are also accepted.

The requirement applies to all Thai embassies worldwide, including those in the United States, France, and Norway. Travelers must also prepare the following:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended entry date

  • A recent passport-style photograph

  • Proof of address (utility bill, rental contract, etc.)

  • A round-trip airline ticket

  • Confirmed accommodation bookings (hotel or host details)

Check your nearest Thai embassy website for the latest forms and templates. French residents should consult the Royal Thai Embassy in France at this link.

Visa on Arrival (VoA) checks

While the proof-of-funds rule officially targets e-Visa applicants, immigration officers at border crossings can request proof of sufficient funds from travelers arriving on a Visa on Arrival (VoA). Entry may be denied if the required documentation is not produced, although such checks are not conducted systematically.

60-day visa-exempt stay in flux?

As of now, passport holders from 93 countries may enter Thailand without a visa for stays up to 60 days. However, Thai authorities are reviewing this privilege and may reduce the visa-free window to 30 days to curb abuses. No final decision has been announced, and an update is expected in the coming months.
