Thailand: return of the requirement to prove financial means to obtain a tourist visa

As of May 2025, Thailand once again requires applicants for tourist visas to provide a proof of sufficient financial resources. According to official e-Visa portaleach candidate must now present proof of a minimum of 20,000 Thai bahts (minimum 700 euros).

Proof of income for e-Visa

Acceptable documents include a bank statement for the last three months or, if the trip is being financed by a third party, a letter of sponsorship. It can also be a pay slip or bank statement.

This requirement applies to all Thai embassies worldwide, including those in the USA, France and Norway. In addition, applicants must also provide:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry
  • A recent passport photo
  • Proof of address (bill, rental contract, etc.)
  • A round-trip plane ticket
  • Accommodation reservations (hotel or host contact details)

You can consult the website of the Thai embassy in your country of residence. For French nationals the link from the website of the Royal Thai Embassy in France.

Visa on arrival VoA

It's also important to note that, although proof of financial means is officially required for tourist visa applications, it is not a requirement for any other visa, travelers arriving with a visa on arrival (VoA) may be required to provide proof of sufficient resources when crossing the border. Immigration officers have the right to refuse entry if the traveler cannot produce these documents, even if this control is not systematic.

Visa waiver from 60 to 30 days?

At present, nationals of 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa for a stay of up to 60 days. However, this system is currently under review: Thai authorities plan to reduce visa-free stay to 30 daysto combat abuse. No official decision has yet been announced, but an update is expected in the coming months.
