Thailand Pledges 500,000 Baht Medical Coverage for Tourists

Thailand launches Thailand Traveller Safety program offering up to 500,000 THB in free medical coverage for tourists until August 31, 2024, aiming to rebuild confidence in its pandemic-hit tourism sector.

In response to the impact of COVID-19 on its tourism sector, Thailand has launched an innovative initiative to strengthen traveler safety and confidence. The "Thailand Traveller Safety" program, running from January 1 to August 31 2024, provides up to 500,000 baht (€13,228.21) in medical coverage for visitors in case of accidents.

This ambitious plan aims to encourage travelers to return to Thailand despite lingering pandemic travel restrictions and assuage concerns over inadequate medical insurance.

  • Program duration: January 1 – August 31

  • Registration must be completed by August 31

  • Medical coverage: up to 500,000 baht (€13,228.21) for accidents

  • Accidental death benefits: up to 1 million baht (€26,456.41)

Thailand’s tourism industry—highly dependent on international visitors—has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. To accelerate recovery, the country has set ambitious targets: welcoming 35 million visitors in 2024 and generating USD 55 billion in revenue.

It’s important to note that the program does not cover accidents resulting from “negligence, malicious intent, illegal acts” or “risky behavior.” Additionally, online registration via the “Thailand Traveller Safety” website will soon be available to secure medical coverage.

How to Access Free Medical Coverage in Thailand

Travelers can simply present the required documents upon arrival at provincial tourism and sports offices or at tourist-assistance centers located within Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok.

This initiative seeks to reinforce Thailand’s reputation as a world-leading holiday destination while giving visitors peace of mind about their medical care during their stay.
