Algeria Lifts Visa Requirement for Expatriates Until October 2024

Algeria temporarily waives visa requirements for nationals abroad until October 31, 2024, streamlining entry with a valid foreign passport and expired national ID or Algerian biometric passport.

The Algerian government has recently announced a significant measure to facilitate the return of Algerian citizens living abroad. Valid until October 31, 2024, this decision allows entry and exit from the national territory without the need to present a prior visa.

This move reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting its diaspora and simplifying their travel to their home country—especially during the summer holiday season.

Streamlined Process for Nationals

Under the new rules, Algerians holding a valid foreign passport can now travel to Algeria with greater ease. Two options are available:

  • Presenting a biometric national identity card, even if expired, along with the valid foreign passport.

  • Using an expired Algerian biometric passport in combination with the valid foreign passport.

The temporary visa exemption aims to strengthen family and cultural ties by encouraging visits—particularly during the summer, when many expatriates choose to return.

Families also benefit from streamlined requirements for children. For example, children under 12 are not required to be present when submitting documents, provided the photos meet the required standards.

In special circumstances such as the father’s death, divorce, or absence, mothers can apply for passports on behalf of their minor children, easing administrative processes during difficult times.

Advance Toward an E-Visa System?

Often delayed, the introduction of an e-visa system for travel to Algeria may finally be on the horizon. Algeria is currently one of the countries with the most complicated and time-consuming visa processes.
