China Grants Visa-Free Entry to Swiss Citizens

China announced visa-free entry for Swiss citizens, strengthening ties with Europe as Switzerland becomes one of the few EU nations with this privilege.

The Chinese government has announced a visa exemption policy for Swiss passport holders, reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two nations. Switzerland now joins a select group of European countries granted visa-free access to China.

China has been Switzerland’s third-largest global trading partner since 2010, after the European Union and the United States.

The Swiss government confirmed ongoing discussions to include the country on the list of nations whose residents qualify for visa-free entry to China for stays of up to 15 days.

While specific terms remain undisclosed, state news agency Xinhua reported that China will unilaterally implement the visa-free policy for Swiss citizens in exchange for Switzerland simplifying visa procedures for Chinese nationals and Chinese businesses investing in Switzerland.

Effective January 11, 2024, China’s National Immigration Administration introduced four new measures to streamline entry for foreign visitors—including business travelers, students, and tourists—seeking to visit China.

Countries Already Exempt from Chinese Visa Requirements

This latest decision follows China’s earlier move to grant visa-free access to travelers from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia since December 1, 2023. Under this visa exemption, tourists from these countries may visit China for up to 15 days through the end of 2024. Belgium is expected to be included in the near future.
