China Simplifies Visa Rules Again: 4 Key Changes You Need to Know

China has announced new visa reforms to boost travel, business, and cultural exchanges. Discover how these changes make entry easier, including visa renewals onshore and visa-free transit at nine major airports.

China has once again announced measures to streamline entry, boost economic recovery, and strengthen its appeal as a hub for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange since the pandemic. The reforms primarily target visa procedures, renewals, and streamlined entry for frequent travelers.

This strategic move aims to solidify China’s role as a global gateway for business, leisure, and cultural engagement. By easing access for business travelers, tourists, and cultural exchanges, China is opening its doors wider to the world. Additional border-regulation easing may follow in the future.

  • Onshore Visa Renewal: Travelers no longer need to leave China to extend their visa.

  • Police Stations for Extensions: Visas can now be renewed at local police stations without visiting a consulate.

  • Visa on Arrival for Urgent Travel: Foreigners with urgent business, investment, or other non-official activities may request a visa on arrival at the airport if they cannot secure one abroad in time. A multi-entry visa may also be granted, provided they present an invitation letter and other required documentation.

  • No-Transit Visa Requirements at 9 Airports: Nine airports – Beijing Capital, Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong, Hangzhou Xiaoshan, Xiamen Gaoqi, Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Bao’an, Chengdu Tianfu and Xi’an Xianyang – now offer visa-free, customs-exempt transit for passengers with layovers under 24 hours.

Visa-Free Travel and Increased Flight Frequencies

Nationals of six countries (including France) can enjoy multiple-entry, visa-free stays in China for up to one year. This initiative seeks to encourage frequent travel between these nations and China, fostering deeper ties in trade, tourism, and culture.

Increased international flight frequencies will further ease travel and support tourism flows.

Additionally, China has introduced mutual visa exemptions with Thailand.
