Financial Hurdles Keep Lebanese Travelers Grounded Abroad

Lebanese citizens face mounting financial barriers to travel overseas, from bank account restrictions to visa requirements that push some toward risky shortcuts.

Many Lebanese dream of studying or working abroad, but the economic crisis that began in 2019 has only deepened the obstacles in their path. Visa access and banking restrictions are now intertwined challenges, making travel or relocation extraordinarily difficult.

The Banking Crisis and Visa Roadblocks

According to Trading Economics, a global economic data platform, the number of Lebanese bank accounts fell by nearly 40% between 2010 and 2022. This shrinkage reduces access to the bank statements required by some foreign embassies when reviewing a visa application.

Lebanese students targeting overseas universities face the same bottleneck; many institutions abroad demand a bank statement proving sufficient funds before issuing admission letters.

Alternative solutions to meet visa requirements

Faced with these challenges, some Lebanese have considered risky alternatives. Hassan, for instance, looked into buying a fabricated bank statement for roughly 400 US dollars from unscrupulous brokers exploiting the demand. Alert to the severe consequences—arrest and travel bans—he ultimately chose not to proceed.

Others, like Ahmad Itani, a 27-year-old student aiming for Europe, have shifted their sights toward Gulf Cooperation Council countries. There, visa rules are less stringent and opening a foreign bank account may provide the financial foothold they need to fund their education and travel plans.

Traveling Without a Bank Account: Possible Routes?

Increasingly, travelers are looking for destinations that don’t demand a bank statement. Countries such as Turkey and the Maldives are easing entry for Lebanese passport holders, offering visas on arrival or straightforward online approvals—options that sidestep the need to produce a domestic bank statement.
