Indonesia Introduces Golden Visa to Attract Foreign Investment

Indonesia's new golden visa offers 5–10 year residency for investors, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers, supporting recovery in tourism and digital-nomad sectors.

Indonesia has announced its new golden visa program, designed to lure foreign investors and skilled professionals while stimulating key sectors like tourism, infrastructure, and energy. The initiative is slated for rollout by late 2023.

The golden visa is aimed at foreigners planning to relocate to Indonesia to launch or expand business ventures. It grants a 5- to-10-year residency permit—tied to the investment amount—with indefinite renewal possible if eligibility criteria remain satisfied.

The program trades residency for economic investment, categorized as follows:

  • Real-estate investment: buying property valued at ≥ 350 000 USD qualifies for a 5-year visa.

  • Business investment: founding or injecting at least 1 million USD into an Indonesian venture earns a 5-year visa.

  • Talent investment: holders of in-demand skills or qualifications can secure a 5-year visa.

Streamlined residency with extended flexibility

The chief advantage of the golden visa is flexibility. Holders may live and work in Indonesia continuously, without the six-monthly exit-and-re-entry requirement that burdens other long-term visas. Renewal and application procedures are also simplified via a convenient online process, cutting paperwork and saving time.

Courting digital nomads to revive post-pandemic tourism

Indonesia—especially Bali—has become a magnet for digital nomads whose remote-work lifestyles demand longer stays and deeper local engagement. Such workers represent a rising investment pool that can help revive the tourism sector, still reeling from COVID-19. Their prolonged presence and community involvement promise meaningful economic spillovers for host regions.

Mixed signals on digital-nomad criteria

Yet the exact eligibility thresholds for digital nomads—minimum income or skill levels—remain unspecified, clouding prospects for this cohort. Clarification from Indonesian authorities is eagerly awaited.

A strategic lever for Indonesia’s economic diversification

Success of the golden visa is vital for Indonesia as it seeks to diversify growth beyond extractive industries and agriculture. Attracting foreign capital and skilled labor will be crucial in securing long-term economic momentum.
