Iran Expands Visa-Free Travel: 68 Nationalities to Benefit

Iran's announcement of visa exemptions for 68 nationalities underlines a strategic push to boost tourism, culture, and commerce across ECO member states.

We finally have specifics on Iran’s next round of visa exemptions. Previously reported figures suggested 50 nationalities, but Iran is now preparing to unveil exemptions for precisely 68 countries.

In an initiative designed to foster stronger tourism and deeper cultural ties across the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ezzatollah Zarghami announced the policy last Thursday. The move aims to make it easier for travelers to explore Iran’s wealth of history and heritage while also strengthening trade, cultural exchange, academic cooperation, and people‑to‑people links among ECO member states, comprising a combined population of around 500 million people.

Boosting Tourism and Local Economies

The expected surge in visitor numbers is set to invigorate Iran’s hospitality industry—hotels, restaurants, transportation—and support broader economic growth. In Ardabil province, Tourism Director Hassan Mohammadiadib said local leaders are confident the initiative will accelerate economic development by implementing targeted programs to showcase natural and historical sites across the region.

What’s Next: 68 Countries and Beyond

The upcoming list of exempted nationalities is expected to cover all current ECO member countries, enabling significantly easier travel between Iran and key regional partners. As Zarghami told delegates at the UN World Tourism Day event in Riyadh, Iran’s deputy Maryam Jalali participated in the ceremony and proposed forming a joint working group with Saudi Arabia to explore mutual visa waiver arrangements.

Together, these measures signal Iran’s commitment to building bridges through tourism, opening its doors to millions more travelers and underscoring the nation’s cultural and economic potential on the global stage.
