Thailand Eyes 60-Day Visa-Free Stays as Tourism Rebounds

Thailand is extending its visa-free period to 60 days and launching a sustainable tourism rating system to revitalize its travel sector after the pandemic, targeting 30 million visitors in 2023.

Thailand is experiencing a tourism rebound following the pandemic, as the Southeast Asian destination refines its strategy to attract visitors with sustainable offerings and a renewed focus on cultural appeal. The country is preparing to welcome far more international travelers under revised conditions and incentives designed to strengthen its position as a top global draw.

Teerasil Tapen Unveils Thailand’s New Tourism Path at IFTM Paris

At the Top Résa - IFTM trade show in Paris, Teerasil Tapen, Regional Director for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, outlined the country’s updated tourism strategy. Adapting to lingering global travel challenges, Thailand has revamped its tourism framework to offer both travelers and operators clearer, more sustainable advantages following the disruptions of 2020.

Aligning Tourism with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals

To enhance the sustainability of its tourism ecosystem and reinforce its reputation as an eco-responsible destination, Thailand has launched the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating project. The initiative aligns tourism activities with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, certifying eligible businesses with a two-year ‘Sustainable Star’ credential after a self-assessment review.

Cultural Depth and the ‘5 F’ Approach Drive Tourism Appeal

Beyond sustainable practices, Thailand is doubling down on cultural enrichment as a key tourism driver. Through a structured ‘5 F strategy, the country is showcasing its culinary traditions, classic festivals, fashion, film, and fighting arts—each element designed to deepen visitor engagement and cultural immersion.

Global Air Travel Constraints Remain in Focus

Teerasil Tapen also highlighted ongoing logistical hurdles in global air connectivity, underscoring how inconsistent health regulations continue to complicate smooth international travel.

Streamlined Visa Policy to Boost Visitor Numbers

  • Visa-free stay extended from 30 to 60 days to encourage longer visits.

  • Government discussions are underway regarding a possible adjustment from a 45-day extension previously considered.

  • An entry fee of around €7 will be introduced to finance health measures and tourism infrastructure improvements.

Tourism Rebound Target: 30 Million Visitors in 2023

With its reinvigorated policy and market repositioning, the Thai government is targeting 30 million visitors in 2023—a figure nearly three times higher than the 11 million welcomed in 2020, and a clear signal of Thailand’s renewed ambition to reassert its dominance on the international travel stage.

By blending eco-conscious initiatives with vibrant cultural expressions, Thailand is crafting a post-pandemic tourism narrative that aligns with evolving traveler expectations and sustainability demands.
