Iran may soon waive visas for travelers from 50 countries

Iran is considering eliminating visa requirements for travelers from 50 countries to boost tourism. Here’s what we know so far—and what travelers must still consider.

Iran is considering eliminating visa requirements for travelers from 50 countries to help revitalize global tourism.

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the country’s tourism authorities have recently proposed waiving visa requirements for citizens of 50 nations. While the full list of affected countries has not yet been released, it is expected to include neighboring states as well as emerging tourism markets for the Islamic Republic.

Currently, Iran already offers visa-free entry to nationals of certain countries, including Turkey, Armenia, Oman, and Syria. The country also allows French tourists to obtain their visas upon arrival, though it is strongly advised to secure a visa in advance.

Travel to Iran is formally discouraged by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs due to persistent security concerns.

Since widespread protests began in September 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, the French government has strongly advised all travelers—including French citizens and dual nationals—against visiting Iran. This advisory remains in effect, and travelers should carefully consider this guidance regardless of potential changes to visa policies.

There is an interesting parallel with Russia, which also pushed to boost tourism amid international tensions.
