Kenya Delays Visa Exemption, e-Visa Still Required
Kenya's planned visa exemption has been postponed indefinitely by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), keeping the existing e-Visa system in force for all international travelers until a new ETA is formally implemented.
Despite President William Ruto’s announcement in December, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) clarified on January 2 that the policy remains unresolved until a new electronic travel authorization (ETA) system is finalized.
The current visa application process will remain unchanged until the government announces updates to the ETA system, though the official site has already launched. The KCAA emphasized that travelers from visa-required countries must continue applying for visas as usual until the government unveils a formal transition for the ETA system. The development and rollout of the ETA are underway to ensure all travelers to Kenya are identified in advance.
Kenya has reversed its earlier decision to waive visa requirements for international travelers. During an event marking Kenya’s 60th independence anniversary from Britain, President Ruto had announced the elimination of visa requirements for all travelers, aligning with his support for visa-free travel across Africa.
At the time, President Ruto delivered a welcoming message stating: "Kenya has a simple message for humanity: Welcome home!" The reversal of the no-visa entry plan represents a significant shift in the country’s travel policies and raises questions about the reasons behind the sudden change and its potential impact on international visitors and diplomatic relations.
