Since April 2026, the Maldives has significantly simplified its immigration system in response to recent global air-traffic disruptions. The Maldivian government has overhauled its policies to make it far easier for international visitors to extend their stays.
Here’s everything you need to know to manage your Maldives visa smoothly, no matter your nationality.
Why the 2026 overhaul?
A spate of recent flight disruptions—centered on major Middle Eastern hubs like Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways—uprooted many travellers’ plans and cut tourist arrivals by roughly 21 %. Mindful of stranded visitors who couldn’t depart on schedule, Maldivian authorities decided to relax and fully digitise the entire visa-extension process to accommodate the shifting landscape.
How to extend your visa in 48 hours
Previously, extending a visa through the Maldives Immigration portal could feel cumbersome, demanding multiple supporting documents. The updated service, accessed via the visa-services section, now operates in three steps:

Quick photo upload: simply upload a clear image of your current entry stamp or visa.
Streamlined payment: settle extension fees safely via the portal’s integrated payment gateway.
Express approval: receive your official approval within 48 hours at most.
While approval is guaranteed in 48 hours, travellers—especially those facing multi-leg return itineraries—are advised to start the process four to five days before the initial visa expiry to dodge last-minute stress.
The standard 30-day visa on arrival
The Maldives remains one of the world’s most accessible holiday destinations. Most international travellers automatically receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with no pre-departure paperwork required from their country of origin. Still, Maldivian customs impose strict entry conditions; bring a complete file:
Passport: valid for at least one month beyond intended arrival.
Return or onward ticket: confirmed and in your name.
Accommodation or funds: a confirmed hotel booking or evidence of sufficient means for your stay.
IMUGA health declaration: mandatory online form, free of charge, to be completed within 96 hours of departure.
Health: proof of yellow-fever vaccination only if transiting through or arriving from a risk country.
Future visas on the horizon: Digital Nomads & Content Creators
To broaden its appeal and reduce reliance on peak seasons, the Maldives is actively shaping the future of immigration policy. Two new long-stay visas are under consideration by the government:
Digital Nomad Visa aimed at remote workers.
Special visa for content creators.
