Russia: Will Multi-Entry e-Visa Launch in 2021?

Russia may introduce a multi-entry e-Visa in 2021, easing travel for tourists and business travelers. Replacement e-Visas for canceled trips are also under review.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated that the upcoming Russian e-Visa may eventually allow multiple entries. The new system is expected to launch on January 1, 2021, though no final confirmation has yet been issued, and the proposal remains under active consideration.

Additionally, travelers who canceled trips to Russia due to the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for free replacement e-Visas to postpone their travel. We will share further details and guidance as soon as this decision is formalized.

Russian e-Visas remain unavailable as of publication and no implementation timeline has been confirmed. We continue to monitor developments and remain available to answer any questions.

In 2020, as part of efforts to stimulate tourism and business exchanges, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced major changes to Russia’s visa policy. The cornerstone of these reforms is a proposed introduction of a multi-entry electronic visa for Russia.

The e-Visa represents a significant transition from traditional visa processes. This streamlined electronic system reduces paperwork, shortens processing times, and lowers entry barriers for tourists and business travelers alike. A multi-entry e-Visa would be especially appealing to frequent visitors, allowing repeated travel within a defined period without the need to reapply each time.

The initiative aligns with Russia’s broader goal of positioning itself as a leading global tourist destination. With its deep cultural, historical, and natural heritage, the country offers substantial attractions for intrepid explorers and cultural enthusiasts the world over. The streamlined visa process is seen as a bold invitation to travelers worldwide to engage with the Russian landscape firsthand.

This announcement has been warmly received within the global tourism industry. A simplified visa regime not only makes Russia more accessible but also encourages foreign investment and strengthens business exchanges across borders.
