Russia Visa-Free Entry: How to Use the New RuID System
Russia’s RuID digital entry system is now mandatory for visa-free travelers. Learn who needs it, how to register, and what to expect at border control.
The Russian border is getting a digital upgrade. If you’re among the travelers who can enter the Russian Federation without a visa, you’ll now need to complete an extra step before departure. The RuID (Gosuslugi RuID) system transforms the entry process into a streamlined, all-digital experience.
This practical guide covers everything you need to know—including who must use RuID, how to register, and what to expect upon arrival—so you can avoid boarding denials and smooth your entry.
Russian diplomatic missions began communicating this change in mid-2024, with the new system formally in effect from 30 June 2025 to 30 June 2026.
Foreign citizens planning to enter the Russian Federation under visa-free regime must complete the registration procedure in the Unified Authentication System before entering.
Key facts you should know
Who must use RuID: Foreign nationals entering Russia without a visa based on bilateral agreements.
Required tool: The official mobile app "RuID" (download from iOS or Android).
Timing: Complete registration at least 72 hours before arrival.
What to present: A QR Code generated by the app at passport control.
Validity: The digital entry notification is valid for 90 days.
What is RuID and why is Russia introducing it?
Russia is running a trial under Government Decree No. 1510 to create a secure, “digital profile” for every foreign visitor. From 30 June 2025 to 30 June 2026, it replaces older manual forms and the traditional paper migration card system.
⚠️ Important exceptions: RuID is not required for:
Holders of a regular visa (tourism or business).
Holders of an e-visa.
Children under 6 years old.
Citizens of Belarus.
Officials on diplomatic or state delegations.
Does RuID replace a visa?
No. For most Europeans (French, Belgians, Swiss, etc.) a regular or e-visa remains mandatory. RuID applies only to nationalities already exempt from visa requirements under bilateral treaties.
Step-by-step: How to register
If your country is on the visa-free list—including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brazil, South Africa, or any CIS nation (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine)—follow these steps, using the ruID app installed on your smartphone (Google Play here or App Store here). The interface is available in several languages, including English.
1. Set up your account
Create a profile with your email (no Russian mobile number required at this stage).
2. Upload biometric data
Upload the following to the app:
• a clear scan of the bio page of your passport
• a live selfie
You may also be asked to record a brief voice sample, depending on app updates.
3. File the entry notification (at least 72 h in advance)
Complete the travel form with:
• planned arrival and departure dates
• purpose of visit
• regions you plan to visit
In urgent cases you can request an expedited review, with results typically available within 4 hours provided you supply digital supporting documents inside the app.
What happens at border control?
Once your entry is approved, the app issues a dynamic QR Code. Present this at any Russian port of entry—airports such as Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, or land borders—to complete entry in minutes.
QR Code scanning: Border officers scan the code to access your RuID digital profile.
Biometric check: A live photo and fingerprints are taken on site to confirm your identity.
Confirmation: When all data matches, you’re cleared electronically; no paper arrival cards are required in-flight.
Pro tips from our travel-documentation desk
• Passport scan: Make sure the bio-page photo has no glare or shadow so the OCR engine reads it correctly.
• Digital backup: Take a screenshot of your QR Code before you leave home—airport Wi-Fi can be unreliable.
• In-country benefits: After your RuID profile is validated, you gain easier access to local SIM cards, public transport and some e-government services.
