South Korea launches electronic arrival card for international travelers

South Korea’s new electronic arrival card system replaces traditional paper forms starting February 2025, streamlining entry for international visitors with a digital solution.

South Korea is poised to modernize its immigration clearance process with the launch of the e-Arrival Card—or Electronic Arrival Card—effective February 24, 2025. This new digital system will replace traditional paper arrival forms, streamlining entry procedures for international travelers.

The initiative is designed to enhance efficiency at immigration checkpoints while delivering greater convenience for visitors. The e-Arrival Card will be mandatory for most foreign nationals traveling to South Korea, with a few notable exemptions, including: South Korea residents with valid registration, travelers holding a valid Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA), and airline crew members.

Instead of completing a paper declaration on arrival, eligible travelers must now complete the form online before departure. To ensure a smooth transition, South Korean immigration authorities will continue accepting the traditional paper arrival form until the end of 2025, giving visitors the option to use either format during the adaptation period.

How to apply for South Korea’s e-Arrival Card:

Travelers are required to complete and submit the e-Arrival Card at least three days before their scheduled arrival in South Korea. Once issued, the card remains valid for 72 hours. Follow this step-by-step guide to applying:

  1. Visit the e-Arrival Card application portal (external link).

  2. Accept the general terms and conditions. A guardian must submit the application on behalf of travelers under age 14.

  3. Upload a scanned copy of your passport.

  4. Enter essential travel details, including arrival and departure information, purpose of visit, accommodation, and contact information.

  5. Submit the online form—there is no fee. Unlike visa applications, the e-Arrival Card does not require approval and can be downloaded immediately after submission.

The e-Arrival Card offers notable benefits: travelers do not need to carry a printed or PDF copy, as their details are stored digitally. A single application can also cover up to nine additional travelers, making it convenient for families and groups. If travel plans change after submission, visitors may update their details on the application before arrival in South Korea.

The Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) remains a mandatory requirement for most travelers to South Korea who are not exempt from this pre-travel process.

Travelers planning trips starting in February 2025 should account for this new mandatory e-Arrival Card to avoid delays at immigration checkpoints during entry.
