Get Ready for Thailand Arrival: New THIM Immigration System Explained
Thailand’s new digital immigration system THIM launches October 2026, replacing paper forms and speeding up airport checks with mobile e-KYC and real-time validation.
Thailand is retiring the familiar blue paper arrival card. Whether you’re travelling in from Europe, Africa or Latin America, or you’re a long-term expat, Thai authorities will roll out the Thailand Immigration Management System (THIM) on 1 October 2026.

What’s changing for your arrival under THIM
Built with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Digital Identity Co Ltd, THIM is positioned to become Thailand’s “super-app” for immigration. Annually welcoming roughly 30 million foreign visitors, the kingdom is finally upgrading airport infrastructure to cut congestion and accelerate entry.
One-and-done profile creation: The previous online system required re-entering the same 20 fields on every trip. THIM reverses that—build a single, complete profile once. On return visits you’ll only need to enter flight and return dates; the whole process now takes under three minutes.
Live data sync: Wave goodbye to QR codes at counters. An embedded e-KYC (Know-Your-Customer) process links your passport chip directly to your file. Immigration officers simply scan your physical passport to approve your entry in seconds.
15-language reach: Launch languages include English, Russian, Japanese and Chinese, with plans to expand to 15 languages, lowering language barriers for global travellers.
The official launch date is 1 October 2026. Travellers before that date still use today’s procedures. We recommend downloading the app as soon as it becomes available in your region to build your profile early. Consular requirements and immigration processes still depend on your visa type and length of stay.
Tourists vs long-term visitors – profiles tailored to your stay
Legal entry and stay rules differ sharply between brief holidays and long-term stays. THIM adapts its workflows accordingly.
🛂 For short-stay tourists
No more hunting for the old blue boarding card tucked inside your passport. Travellers undergoing stricter screening will enjoy far faster clearance, and digital transmission ensures your exact accommodation and return-flight details are relayed seamlessly—no language confusion at the officer’s desk.
🛂 For expats, digital nomads and long-stay visa holders
This is where THIM shows its full power. Eventually the Immigration Bureau will consolidate most services into a single gateway:
90-day check-ins: Mandatory residence declarations can be filed in-app, eliminating queues at provincial immigration offices.
Extension services: Change-of-status requests, appointment booking and document uploads all happen online.
Smart Gates: Long-stay visa holders (e.g., diplomatic, BOI investors) can use airport e-gates thanks to facial recognition matched to the biometric chip in your passport.
Three key steps to ready your digital profile
Follow these three steps now to avoid any snarl-ups when THIM goes live:
Passport-chip sanity check: THIM relies on a readable RFID chip in a recent biometric passport. Make sure yours is valid, undamaged and its MRZ band and chip are legible.
Single secure enrolment (e-KYC): Launch the app and verify your identity—usually by scanning your passport chip and taking a selfie. Do this from home on a stable Wi-Fi network well before departure.
Flight and hotel finalisation: Only lock in your digital declaration once you have the confirmed return ticket and your first night’s hotel booking; THIM automatically cross-checks both pieces of data.
Editor’s tip: As travel-industry insiders who’ve guided thousands of international trips, we know the “all-digital” shift can unsettle visitors, especially on data safety.
Security promise: AWS employs a “sovereignty-by-design” architecture so all personal data captured in THIM stays under Thai jurisdiction and meets the kingdom’s stringent government security standards.
Backup rule: During early roll-out phases (late-2026) server glitches can strike. Always carry printed copies of your Thai e-Visa (if required by nationality), hotel vouchers and onward tickets. Tech makes travel easier—paper remains the best failsafe.
I’m travelling to Thailand before 1 October 2026—what now?
Verify if you need an electronic visa or classic sticker visa based on nationality and eligibility. Currently, 93 nationalities can enter visa-free for 60 days, but Thai authorities recently announced the no-visa window will shorten to 30 days, extendable by another 30 days on the ground. That change is expected to take effect shortly. Since 1 May 2025, every visitor arriving by air, land or sea must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 72 hours of landing. Exemptions include airside transits, Thai nationals, Border Pass holders and those not passing through Thai immigration.
