Will 83 new nationalities soon qualify for Indonesia's e-visa?
Indonesia may soon expand e-visa eligibility to 169 countries, including Algeria and Bangladesh, to boost tourism recovery after Covid-19 in destinations like Bali.
The Indonesian tourism sector has proposed expanding the list of countries eligible for visa-on-arrival or e-visa issuance to the government. Bali’s deputy governor, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, confirmed the initiative is under review, with eligible countries likely to include destinations deemed safe.
The Indonesian government recently launched an electronic visa (e-VOA) system for nationals of China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and India. Among the proposed 83 countries are Algeria, Bangladesh, Kenya, Panama, and Zimbabwe, said Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, head of Bali’s Tourism Board. If approved, this would bring the total to 169 eligible nationalities for Indonesia’s visa-on-arrival, allowing foreign tourists to stay for 30–60 days, officials confirmed.
The move aims to support Bali’s tourism sector, which sustained severe losses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two e-visa types are available in Indonesia:
Visitor e-Visa: up to 30 days for tourism or business travel
Tourism e-Visa: up to 60 consecutive days exclusively for tourists
In 2019, Indonesia welcomed over 16 million international tourists, generating revenues exceeding $20 billion. Bali alone attracted more than 6 million visitors that year. Tourism contributes about 4% of Indonesia’s GDP and employs roughly 13 million people.
