Ireland Moves Citizenship Applications Fully Online
Ireland launches a new online citizenship application system, modernizing immigration services with streamlined digital processing, reduced paperwork, and real-time tracking.
Ireland is taking a major step forward in modernising its immigration services by rolling out an online citizenship application system.
The Department of Justice’s immigration services modernisation programme is digitalising a number of paper-based immigration processes and creating a single portal where individuals can manage and view all aspects of their involvement with immigration services.
Streamlining the application process with digitalisation
Introducing an online citizenship application system aims to enhance public service delivery and improve the efficiency of the application process. Applicants can now complete and submit their application forms, upload supporting documents, and pay fees entirely online—eliminating the need to handle voluminous and complex paper applications.
A centralised portal for all immigration-related matters
The new portal lets individuals manage and view their immigration service activities such as applications and payments in one place.
Existing applications can be tracked in real time, with updates and guidance provided to applicants.
The system also offers step‑by‑step support throughout the citizenship application journey, making it easier for those seeking Irish citizenship.
Reducing paper to boost efficiency and sustainability
According to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, moving services online will not only streamline citizenship applications but also help deliver on environmental goals. Reducing reliance on paper-based processes is a strategic priority across Irish public administration, and this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to that agenda. It is expected to lead to significant reductions in paper, ink and energy consumption associated with traditional administrative procedures.
Enhancing customer experience
The new digital system is designed to provide faster, more efficient support for citizenship applicants—allowing more applications to be processed within tighter timeframes. Users will also benefit from immediate, accurate updates about their application status, eliminating uncertainty and improving overall service satisfaction.

In 2022 the Irish government received a record 66,000 citizenship applications—a 10% increase over 2021—continuing a multiyear upward trend, especially among applicants from EU countries.
In 2022 European Union nationals made up 54% of all Irish citizenship applications, cementing the EU as the leading source of applicants.
The United Kingdom, United States, China and India were also among the top countries of origin for Irish citizenship applicants.
