Israel announces launch of e-visa by end of 2023
Israel will implement an electronic visa system for international travelers by the end of 2023, reducing bureaucracy and streamlining entry procedures.
This project was first announced in 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of launching this innovation by spring 2022. Israel’s e-visa is now expected to go live by the end of 2023. Following multiple working sessions, Israeli authorities have made progress in implementing the system.
The new e-visa procedure will streamline the arrival process for tourists visiting Israel. Officials noted that the current visa application process and border checks at maritime entry points can be cumbersome for travelers. The goal of the e-visa is to simplify entry requirements and improve the visitor experience.
Currently, international travelers must apply for a visa at an Israeli embassy or consulate. This requires in-person visits to the nearest immigration office, with lengthy processing times. Applications must be submitted well in advance of travel.
Moshe Arbel, Israel’s Interior Minister, stated: “By the end of the year, together with the Tourism Minister, we will introduce an e-visa and open up the economy.”
The e-visa will allow travelers to complete their application entirely online. Travelers will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date. Upon entry, authorities will no longer stamp passports; instead, a blue paper vignette will be issued and must be kept for the duration of the stay.
French and other EU citizens are exempt from visa requirements for Israel. Travelers from these countries can visit for up to three months without applying for an e-visa or traditional visa. Over 101 countries are also visa-exempt.
