Kenya ETA requirements: tudo you need from 2024

From 1 January 2024, most international visitors must secure a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. Here is the latest step-by-step on eligibility, cost, documents and whether you really need the premium option.

From 1 January 2024, most international visitors will be able to enter Kenya without a visa but will still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. Here’s everything you need to know about the new rule and how to apply, as confirmed by Kenyan authorities.

What is the Kenya ETA?

The Kenya ETA is a semi-automated system used to pre-check visitor eligibility to enter the country.

Applications open on 27 December. Travellers are advised to apply once accommodation and transport are booked. The existing e-Visa portal is expected to close at that time, although e-Visas already issued will remain valid throughout 2024.

Who needs a Kenya ETA?

All foreign visitors require an ETA, except citizens of East African Community member states (Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, DR Congo and Somalia).

How do I apply for the Kenya ETA?

The ETA can be requested either via the government portal or through a new mobile app called Kenya Travel Authorisation. Steps include:

  • Click “Apply Now”;

  • Select your nationality;

  • Upload a scanned copy of your passport;

  • Upload a digital ID photo or take a selfie;

  • Complete the ETA form;

  • Provide proof of accommodation;

  • Upload transport evidence;

  • Choose processing time: standard (up to 72 hours) or premium;

  • Submit the application.

After submission you’ll receive a receipt email and a payment confirmation. Once a decision is made, immigration will send an email approving or rejecting your request. If approved, print or save the PDF attachment on your phone or within the Kenya Travel Authorisation app.

Required documents for the Kenya ETA

When you apply for an ETA, be ready to supply:

  • A copy of your passport;

  • A passport-style photo or a selfie;

  • A valid flight ticket;

  • Proof of accommodation for your stay.

How much does the Kenya ETA cost?

The fee depends on the processing speed. Kenya now offers two levels of service:

  • Standard processing – US$30;

  • Premium processing – US$50 (plus roughly 3 % in processing fees).

The authorisation is compulsory even for minors. This replaces the previous visa exemption for travellers under 16.

Transiting through Kenya for less than 72 hours but leaving the international zone? You still need an ETA.

Why upgrade to premium?

The premium service promises faster turnaround (versus up to 72 hours for standard), live chat or email support, and the ability to amend your application if travel plans change.

The Republic of Kenya is the first country to introduce this two-tier ETA system.
