Libya Finally Introduces Electronic Visa System
Libya is poised to launch an all-encompassing e-visa platform covering tourist and work visas—aimed at streamlining entry, boosting tourism, and balancing its labour market. Explore the new system and recent visa exemptions.
After repeated signals, Libya is preparing to roll out a full electronic-visa system covering all visa types, from tourist to work permits. The initiative is designed to simplify the application process and attract more foreign visitors and workers, while the government aims to regulate inflows of expatriate labour and address domestic market imbalances.
Imminent e-Visa launch
Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and the Libyan Telecoms Company, the e-visa portal promises a seamless application and payment journey. Years of inter-department planning and coordination are set to culminate in the coming months.
Libya is also pursuing reciprocal-visa agreements and exemptions with regional partners—most notably Egypt and Turkey—as part of its broader diplomatic strategy. Since 2023 it has relaxed entry rules for Egyptians and Turks, waiving visa requirements for visitors under 18 and for women and men over 55.
Steps taken to ready the system
Joint effort by the Passport Authority, Ministry of Labour and Libyan Telecoms Company
Development of an online portal for applications, payments and e-visa issuance
Priority roll-out of electronic work visas before the tourism e-visa goes live
Crises may shadow the riches, but Libya calls
Despite decades of turmoil, Libya remains a land steeped in ancient ruins, sweeping desert vistas and vibrant cultures that continue to draw explorers. That said, several Western governments maintain formal travel advisories cautioning against visits.
Most travellers still require a Libyan visa. Current entry policies remain strict: business visitors must present invitation letters from both employer and Libyan host specifying the visit’s scope and duration, while tourists are largely restricted to tightly organised group itineraries.
