Niger to launch electronic visa soon
Niger will soon introduce an electronic visa system to streamline border management amid evolving international travel norms.
Like many countries around the world, Niger will soon launch its own electronic visa system. A valuable travel document designed to facilitate entry for foreign visitors—especially amid evolving health protocols and travel norms—this digitalized process is increasingly adopted by governments worldwide.
The director of Niger’s Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DST) highlighted challenges posed by the country’s current visa regulations. He emphasized how an electronic visa could enhance border security and efficiency, particularly given the country’s vast landscape. According to Sophie Hoffmann, Head of the IOM’s Border Management Unit in Niger, a modernized approach is essential to manage a territory with nearly 5,600 kilometers of borders, about 30 official land entry points, and three international airports. The electronic visa will soon be available to travelers heading to Niger.
Tourism is a modest yet critical sector for Niger’s economy and growth. While the country is widely recognized for its oil industry, tourism plays a key role as an untapped economic driver.
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Niger welcomed approximately 109,000 international tourists in 2019, a modest increase from 101,000 visitors in 2018. Most visitors come from neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Mali, as well as European destinations like France. Tourism revenues were estimated at around $46 million in 2019.
