Russia’s New Unified e-Visa: Key Details for 2021 Travelers

Russia will launch its unified e-Visa in early 2021, replacing three regional schemes and allowing 16-day stays for tourists and business travelers from 52 eligible countries, including most of Europe.

As previously reported, Russia has been preparing its new unified e-Visa, due to come into effect in early 2021. We have now received fresh details from the Russian government:

The upcoming e-Visa will replace the three separate e-Visa categories previously required for travel to Kaliningrad, Leningrad Oblast, and Russia’s Far East with a single document. Travelers will also benefit from 29 designated entry points and access for citizens of 52 countries—including many in Europe. The approved list of air, rail, road, and seaport entry points may yet be expanded.

Under the new scheme, the Russian e-Visa will cover tourist, business, and humanitarian visits up to 16 days. Once issued, the visa grants a 60-day travel window to enter Russia.

The document had been scheduled for launch on 1 January 2021, but Russia’s government has now stated the unified e-Visa will be available “in early 2021,” reflecting the impact of the global health crisis.

Tourism is vital to Russia’s economy, contributing directly and indirectly to GDP and supporting jobs across hospitality, food service, transport, and leisure sectors.

Tourism is the sixth-largest sector by direct and indirect contribution to Russia’s GDP.

Russia’s rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes draw visitors to world-famous sites such as Red Square, the Kremlin, the Hermitage, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, the Museum of Moscow History, the Museum of Saint Petersburg History, and many others.

The sector relies heavily on visitors from neighboring countries including China, Germany, Finland, Poland, and Estonia. Expanding tourism is a strategic goal for diversifying Russia’s economy and reducing dependence on raw materials.

Major international events—most notably the 2018 FIFA World Cup—have already demonstrated Russia’s capacity to attract millions of foreign visitors.
