No, Egypt has not yet scrapped visas for Western travelers
Fact-check: Rumors claiming Egypt lifted visa requirements for Western nationals are false; official rules remain unchanged, exposing travelers to boarding refusals.
It’s the kind of headline that has set travelers’ pulses racing and tourism websites buzzing within days: Egypt is abolishing visas for American, British and European citizens.
Don’t tuck away your credit card just yet. After verifying Egypt’s government press releases and checking diplomatic channels, we can report with certainty: that story is false—or at best, a rush to judgment based on rumor. As travel-formalities professionals, we urge you to ignore the hearsay: boarding agents will treat you the same way tomorrow.
What’s swirling online (and why it’s misleading)
Several outlets—including Travel and Tour World and other specialized platforms—have published items (often AI-generated…) claiming Egypt “is opening its gates” by enlarging its visa-free policy to lure tourists back. Yet no official decree has been signed by the Ministry of the Interior—the only body empowered to alter entry rules.

Possible consequences: If you reach the check-in desk with no e-visa (or without cash for the standard 25–30 USD visa-on-arrival fee or the 25 USD e-Visa), airlines are duty-bound to refuse boarding. No visa = no flight.
Risk of denial of boarding: Carriers verify documents before departure; incorrect paperwork can leave you stranded.
Confusion over the “Sinai Only” loophole: A long-standing exception grants a free 15-day Sinai stamp for arrivals at Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab or Nuweiba. Many articles conflate this regional perk with a national waiver. Stepping beyond the Sinai Peninsula—for Cairo pyramids or Luxor, for example—means that stamp is invalid.
Fraudulent “exemption certificates”: Unscrupulous sites peddle worthless documents promising hassle-free entry; save your money instead.
How to enter Egypt today – guaranteed safe route
Leave no room for doubt: follow these two official pathways if you’re from North America or Western Europe.
E-Visa (recommended)
Apply at least seven days before departure via the official portal or a licensed agency. You receive a PDF with a QR code—simple, fast, skips Cairo arrivals queues.Visa on arrival
Pay 25–30 USD in cash (euros treated, but at poor exchange) before passport control; queue at a dedicated bank counter near arrivals.
One caveat: Travelers from many African, Asian or Middle Eastern nationalities still need embassy-stamped visas in advance—ignore blanket headlines.
Egypt’s broader goal—to host 30 million tourists and streamline entry—does exist. Future blanket exemptions may eventually appear, yet diplomatic protocol says nothing is real until it’s published in the Official Gazette.
