Preparing your arrival in Thailand: The new THIM immigration system

The era of the blue paper form in Thailand is over. Whether you're planning a tourist trip from Europe, Africa or Latin America, or you're a long-standing expatriate, the Thai authorities are launching on October 1, 2026 the THIM system (Thailand Immigration Management System).

Find out how this new mobile application will streamline your passage through customs and cut red tape.

THIM application: what's new for your arrival?

Developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) And Digital Identity Co Ltd, The THIM platform is set to become Thailand's โ€œSuper Appโ€ for immigration. The country, which welcomes some 30 million international visitors a year, is finally modernizing its infrastructure to relieve airport congestion.

No more repetitive data entry: The previous online system required you to fill in 20 fields for each trip. Now you create your complete profile just once. On subsequent trips, only the flight number and return date are required. Filling in takes less than 3 minutes.
Real-time synchronization : No need to present a QR code at immigration counters. Thanks to an e-KYC (Know Your Customer) process, your data is linked directly to your passport. All the officer has to do is scan your physical document to validate your file.
Multilingualism : From launch, the application supports English, Russian, Japanese and Chinese, with a planned extension to 15 languages to make it easier for travelers worldwide.

The official roll-out date is October 1, 2026. If you travel before this date, the current procedures will remain in force. However, we advise you to download the application as soon as it is available in your region, so that you can create your profile in advance. Consular requirements and immigration processes vary greatly depending on the nature of your stay.

Tourists vs. expatriates: how does this affect your profile?

Consular requirements and immigration processes vary greatly depending on the nature of your stay. The THIM platform adapts its functionalities according to your visa.

๐Ÿ›‚ For international tourists (short stays)
No more worrying about losing the famous little blue piece of paper slipped into your passport. Travelers, who are often subject to stricter controls, will benefit from a much faster passage through customs. Full digitization also ensures accurate transmission of data (accommodation, return tickets, etc.), with no language barrier to the immigration officer.

๐Ÿ›‚ For expatriates, teleworkers and long-stay visas
This is where the application really comes into its own. Eventually, the Immigration Office will transform THIM into a one-stop shop:
90-day score : Compulsory declaration of residence can be made entirely via the application, avoiding queues at provincial offices.
Extension services : Change of status requests, appointments and document submissions will be handled online.
Smart Gates: Holders of long-stay visas (diplomatic status, Board of Investment...) will be able to use automated airport airlocks thanks to facial recognition coupled with their passport's biometric chip.

3 steps to preparing your digital profile

To avoid customs blockages following the implementation of this new system, here is the strict protocol we recommend you adopt:
Biometrics verification : As the THIM system relies on reading the chip in your passport, make sure your travel document is a recent biometric passport in perfect condition (legibility of MRZ band and RFID chip).
Creating a single profile (e-KYC) : The first time you use the application, you'll need to validate your identity (usually by scanning your passport and taking a selfie). Do this from home, on a stable WiFi network, well before you leave for the airport.
Flight information update : Only validate your digital declaration once your return ticket has been formally issued and your first night's accommodation confirmed, as the system will automatically cross-reference this data.

Our agency's advice: As experts in travel formalities, we know that the transition to โ€œall digitalโ€ sometimes worries our international travelers, especially when it comes to data protection.
A guarantee of safety: AWS has implemented a โ€œsovereignty by designโ€ architecture (sovereignty by design). This ensures that all your personal data entered into the application remains stored under Thai jurisdiction, meeting strict government security requirements.
Mistake to avoid: During the launch phases (late 2026), server bugs are frequent. Always carry printed copies with you your Thai e-Visa (if required by your nationality), hotel reservations and onward tickets. Technology makes travel easier, but paper is still the best backup insurance.

I'm travelling to Thailand before October 2026. What procedure do I need to follow?
Before you leave, it's a good idea to check whether you need to have a e-visa or classic visa application, depending on your nationality and eligibility. Currently, 93 nationalities are visa-exempt for a 60-day stay. Please note, the authorities recently announced reduce the visa-free stay to 30 days, with an additional 30-day extension on site. This new condition should come into force shortly.

Since May 1, 2025, all travelers arriving by air, land or sea must complete the TDAC electronic form (Thailand Digital Arrival Card). This can be done within 72 hours of your arrival in Thailand. You may be exempted from this formality if you are a transit or connecting passenger who does not pass through Thai immigration, a Thai national or a Border Pass holder.
