After Launching e-Visa, Russia Plans Major Extension for Travelers

Russia's e-Visa system, which has already welcomed over half a million travelers, may soon extend its validity from 60 to 120 days and allow longer 30-day stays, making it easier for globetrotters to explore the country.

Since 1 August 2023, Russia has relaunched its electronic-visa system, making international travel to the country smoother despite ongoing challenges. In its first year alone, the initiative has already attracted more than 541 000 visitors—and major changes may soon be on the way.

Big plans for a winning system

The Kremlin is not resting on its laurels. With e-Visa uptake soaring, Russian officials are considering a significant expansion of its validity—the period during which the e-Visa can be used after issue. Currently capped at 60 days with a 16-day maximum stay, the electronic visa could see its validity double to 120 days, while the permissible stay is extended to 30 days.

If approved, these upgrades would be a game-changer for visitors. Imagine a full month to travel Russia’s vast landscapes, from St Petersburg and Moscow to Vladivostok and Lake Baikal, without the stress of tight scheduling. A dream come true for long-haul adventurers.

More countries, more visitors

Russia is also stepping up efforts to open its doors wider: 11 new countries have recently been added to the list of e-Visa-eligible nations—Barbados, Bhutan, Eswatini, Jordan, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan and Zimbabwe.

The change brings the total number of participating countries to 64, opening visa-free—or rather, e-Visa—travel to even more nationalities.

Easy to use, hard to resist

The appeal of the Russian e-Visa lies in its simplicity. Gone are the days of complex paperwork and mandatory hotel voucher coupons to submit to embassies in person. Today, a straightforward online application is all that’s needed—no invitation letter, no hotel booking required. Approval arrives within five days, welcoming travelers for tourism, business visits or private travel.

No wonder it’s caught on fast: between August 2023 and July 2024, a total of 541 000 electronic visas were issued, representing 70 % of all visas granted during that period.

The numbers speak for themselves: China, Estonia, Germany, Turkey and India top the list of e-Visa recipients, accounting for more than 90 % of all permits issued. An encouraging sign for Russia’s economy, which stands to benefit from diversified tourism revenues.
