Somalia Rolls Out e-Visa System to Streamline Travel and Enhance Security

Somalia introduces an electronic visa system to simplify entry procedures, bolster security, and modernize migration management via its new e-Visa/eTAS portal.

Somalia has launched an electronic visa application system to streamline entry procedures, enhance security, and modernize migration management. Dubbed the Electronic Visa and Travel Authorisation System (E-Visa/eTAS), it is now accessible via a dedicated online portal starting 1 September 2025.

How the e-Visa/eTAS Works

Travelers must now submit entry applications online prior to arrival in Somalia, a move designed to speed processing time, reduce bottlenecks, and improve overall efficiency. According to Isxaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of the Foreign Nationals and Entry Permits Department, the system features automated checks to ensure smooth operation and a specialist team has been trained to manage it securely. The e-visa is reportedly set at 64 USD.

Who Needs to Apply?

The eTAS electronic visa is open to travelers of all nationalities, meaning everyone traveling to Somalia should submit an online application. Your electronic visa must be approved and your travel authorization received before departure. The system covers both adults and children; passports must be valid for at least six months.

Exemptions apply to holders of multiple-entry visas, diplomatic or UNLP passport holders, permit holders, and citizens of countries with visa-free travel agreements with Somalia.

Is an on-arrival visa still available?

A 30-day on-arrival visa is still an option for all nationalities, provided arrival is by air. Travelers entering Somalia via the following airports may obtain an on-arrival visa:

  • Bender Qaasim Airport, Bosaso

  • Garowe International Airport

  • Abdullahi Yusuf Airport, Gaal Kacyo

  • Mogadishu International Airport

  • Kismayo International Airport

Speaking to media, Director General Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow framed the initiative in the context of Somalia’s recent EAC membership, which is accelerating trade, investment, and tourism under easier movement policies. The new travel formalities also boost data security and border management.

The Minister of Interior, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, added that visa fees paid to the government will help strengthen national financial institutions.
