Sri Lanka, known as a popular tourist destination, recently approved the granting of a visa from Digital Nomad. This initiative aims to attracting freelance workers from all over the world who are looking to establish themselves in a new location. According to the information available, applicants for the Digital Nomad visa will need to justify a minimum monthly income of $2,000, which must be channeled through the Sri Lankan banking system.
A visa renewable every year
One of the interesting aspects of this new visa is that it can be renewed each yearsubject to certification of the required funds. The authorities have set the application fee for the visa at $500, and also covers the holder's spouse and dependants. What's more, the visa allows holders to work freely remotely from the country for up to a year, while enjoying the cultural and natural riches Sri Lanka has to offer.
Minister Tiran Alles supports the project
The Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has been active in promoting this new visa offer aimed at supporting the tourism sector and attract a new wave of self-employed workers. Thanks to this initiative, the Sri Lankan authorities hope that the country will become a popular destination for digital nomads and thus contribute to economic growth.
A growing craze for the Digital Nomad concept
Sri Lanka is not the first country to bank on tourism for the self-employed. Other destinations such as Thailand and Georgia have also adopted similar policies to attract these new traveler profiles. This trend towards digital nomadism is growing rapidly, not least because the COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged many employers to reconsider their telecommuting practices. There's no doubt that this new Sri Lankan visa will appeal to a large number of digital nomads, boosting the local economy.
