Swiss Schengen Visa Goes Digital: What Travelers Need to Know

From February 1, 2024, Switzerland will align with the EU by introducing digital Schengen visas and passport barcodes. Learn how these changes simplify visa procedures for travelers.

In a move to align with European Union regulations, Switzerland will introduce digital visas and passport barcodes from February 1, 2024. Here’s what the latest changes to Swiss visa policies mean for travelers.

Digital Schengen visas to streamline the process

The Swiss Federal Council has launched a consultation process to implement digital Schengen visas, following the EU’s new regulation adopted on November 13, 2023. All Schengen visa applications must now be submitted electronically via a European platform. The changes include the creation of a future platform, updates to national visa systems, and delegating document verification tasks to third parties.

Why the shift to digital?

  • Simplify and improve procedures for applicants

  • Streamline processing across Schengen states

  • Enhance cooperation among migration authorities

Consequently, visa formats will change: visas will now be issued as both digital and paper documents. The Federal Council has approved an amendment to the Visa Issuance and Entry Ordinance, allowing the issuance of a digital visa with a barcode alongside traditional passport stickers.

Who does this affect?

This digitalization applies not only to short-stay Schengen visas but also to visas for stays exceeding 90 days. Whether for tourism, business, or family visits, these measures aim to ease visa applications and processing for all travelers.
