Thailand visa extensions now available online for expats

Expatriates in Thailand can now extend their visas online through a new e-Extension service, saving hours at immigration offices.

There are many reasons why Thailand is a desirable place to live: its tropical beaches, the kindness of its people, and the food…

But to fully enjoy all that the country has to offer, obtaining the right visa is essential—and the paperwork can be time-consuming.

Good news for expatriates in Thailand! Since 8 November 2022, a new online service allows you to extend your visa and skip the long waits at immigration offices. Processing times have plummeted from over an hour to just three minutes.

The reasons for extending a visa in Thailand may vary, including for study, teaching, or working for a government body.

This new e-Extension covers a range of visas, including:

  • 30-day visa on arrival

  • 60-day tourist visa

  • 45-day visa exemption

  • Student visas

  • Visas for foreigners married to Thai nationals

Retirement visa extensions are not included.

To apply, visit the dedicated website Thaiextension.vfsevisa.com to complete the process, including payment of fees.

For now, the e-Extension service is only available to expatriates living or working in Bangkok. However, immigration authorities plan to roll it out to all local immigration offices in the future. Applicants are still required to visit the Chaeng Wattana Road Immigration Bureau in person to collect their visa sticker and confirm their identity. So this isn't a fully online service yet.

Travelers not planning a long-term stay can still apply for a 60-day tourist visa. Depending on nationality, this application may even be processed online via an e-visa system.
