US Consulate in Strasbourg Faces Closure Threat

The US State Department is considering shuttering several American consulates in France, including Strasbourg, as part of cost-cutting measures. Locals and officials decry the potential move.

The US State Department, under President Donald Trump, is considering shuttering several American consulates in France—including the one in Strasbourg—as part of broader efforts to reduce operating costs. If implemented, such a decision would have tangible consequences for travelers and strain Franco-American diplomatic relations alike.

According to a report published by Politico on February 27, the Trump administration is seeking to scale back the US diplomatic footprint abroad, retaining only consulates deemed immediately vital to US interests.

Consulates in Rennes, Lyon, and Bordeaux are also reportedly on the table.

The announcement has triggered sharp reactions among local leaders. Strasbourg Mayor Jeanne Barseghian and Pia Imbs, president of the Eurometropole of Strasbourg, called the move an "alarming signal," warning of "considerable repercussions on international ties." President of the Grand Est region Franck Leroy went further, calling it "another sign of distrust toward Europe."

Statement released in response to the rumors

For travelers and American residents in the region, closure of the Strasbourg consulate would mean more complex administrative procedures. Services such as passport renewals or visa applications would be transferred to the US embassy in Paris or the consulate in Marseille, likely resulting in longer wait times and additional travel.

Beyond practical concerns, the move would carry significant diplomatic implications. Open since 1866 and accredited as an observer at the Council of Europe, the Strasbourg consulate’s closure could signal a broader American disengagement from European institutions—a prospect all the more striking in a city that stands at the heart of continental diplomacy.

Officials have cautioned that the report remains unconfirmed. When approached by Les Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace (DNA), the US consulate in Strasbourg declined to either confirm or deny the rumors.

In response, local mobilization is growing. The nonprofit Alsace – États-Unis has announced plans to hold a rally, while municipal officials like Pierre Jakubowicz are considering filing a formal motion urging the consulate’s preservation.
