Bali Tax Overhaul: Proof of Payment Now Mandatory for Boarding

From April 1, 2025, international airlines at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport will require proof of Bali Tourist Tax payment before boarding. Learn how to pay online, who’s exempt, and penalties for non-compliance.

Starting 1 April 2025, international airlines operating departures from Bali will demand passengers present proof of payment for the mandatory tourist tax at check-in or boarding gates.

This new rule follows a government decree intended to enforce Bali’s Tourist Tax, introduced in February 2024. All foreign visitors, including children, must pay 150 000 Indonesian rupiahs (≈ US$9.50). The levy supports environmental cleaning, cultural preservation and sustainable tourism management.

Authorities report that roughly 60 % of visitors had not paid the tax and have now pledged tougher sanctions: fines up to ten times the tax or a one-week prison term.

Travellers should settle online via the official Love Bali portal or the “Love Bali” smartphone app. Once paid, a QR-code voucher is issued; this must be shown at Ngurah Rai Airport and all Bali maritime terminals.

Diplomatic and official passport holders, crew members, foreign-resident permit holders (KITAS/KITAP) and international students are among those exempt from the tax.

The move is part of a wider drive to attract ‘quality tourists’ and curb unacceptable visitor behavior, helping safeguard Bali’s natural and cultural heritage while keeping tourism sustainable.
