Burkina Faso Waives Visa Fees for African Travelers

The Burkina Faso government has announced free visas for all African nationals entering the country, aiming to boost regional mobility and tourism while advancing continental integration.

The Burkina Faso government has taken a significant step toward intra-African mobility, announcing free visas for all African nationals traveling to the country. This decision, made during the Council of Ministers meeting on September 11, 2025, aims to enhance regional connectivity and promote Burkina Faso’s tourism and culture abroad.

This visa fee waiver for African nationals will contribute to promoting Burkinabè tourism, culture, and the country’s visibility overseas.

Summary of the Council of Ministers meeting, September 11, 2025

Advancing African Integration

This initiative aligns with President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision of fostering fraternity and economic ties across the continent. Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana emphasized two key goals: facilitating the free movement of people and goods and accelerating Africa’s continental integration process.

How Visa Waivers Work

The exemption covers only visa processing fees. All African travelers must still apply online via the official portal www.visaburkina.bf and have their applications reviewed. Approved applicants will receive visas at no cost, though the mandatory administrative process remains in place.

The minister clarified that this is not a visa-free entry. Existing visa procedures remain, and only select bilateral or regional agreements currently allow visa-free access for specific nationalities.

Tourism and Cooperation Boost Expected

The government anticipates the policy will stimulate tourism, elevate the country’s global profile, and strengthen cooperation with African nations. The move reflects a continental trend, mirroring initiatives by Rwanda, Kenya, and Benin to promote intra-African exchanges. All travelers, including those already exempt from fees, must obtain an e-Visa—whether for transit, short stays, or long-term visits—via the official authority platform.
