Google Unveils AI Travel Planner and Maps List Tools for Trip Planning

Google's latest updates introduce an AI-powered itinerary builder for personalized trips and smarter list features in Google Maps, helping travelers plan with local insights and trendspotting.

As summer approaches, Google has unveiled a series of updates that firmly position it in the travel planning process while offering additional insights into purchasing intentions in the tourism sector. Among the new features is the ability to create travel itineraries using artificial intelligence and personalized list tools within Google Maps.

Plan trips with Google’s AI travel planner

In its latest update, Google has rolled out a feature that allows users to generate personalized travel itineraries and stay ideas using generative AI. Currently available only in English and within the United States for users in the Search Generative Experience (SGE) early-access program, the tool draws on information from various websites, reviews, photos, and other data Google collects about locations worldwide.

Users can request a plan such as, “Plan a three-day history-focused trip to Philadelphia,” and receive a sample itinerary featuring attractions, restaurants, flight options, and hotel recommendations organized by time of day.

While AI travel-assistant startups like TripIt and Hopper already exist, Google’s update positions the tech giant as a key competitor while also collecting data on travel purchasing intent and user interest in such services.

Personalized recommendations and lists in Google Maps

When searching Google Maps for cities, users will now see local recommendations from small publishers and bloggers. New tools have also been added to help users curate their own lists for better trip organization or to share favorite places with friends and family.

  • Local recommendations: In select U.S. and Canadian cities, Google Maps will now provide recommendations sourced from locals and editors, including lists of restaurants categorized as “trending, popular, and must-try,” drawing on Google Maps data.

  • Discoverable lists: When browsing a specific restaurant or place on Maps, a new AI-powered feature will highlight key photos and reviews that capture the most-loved aspects of the spot. The AI can even help identify dish names—useful for travelers in unfamiliar destinations.

  • Customization tools: Users can now organize their saved lists by favorites or other criteria using updated customization options. Additionally, lists can be enriched with social media content to add context and make sharing easier with those viewing the saved list.

Easier on-screen translations on Android

Google is also set to introduce a new feature for certain Android devices that translates on-screen content without switching apps. This translation tool is part of the feature launched in January that lets Android users initiate a Google search by circling text or an image on the screen.
