India and Russia poised to sign reciprocal visa exemption deal
If finalized by year-end, a reciprocal visa exemption between India and Russia would mark a historic step in bilateral ties and tourism, building on the success of visa-free group travel between Russia and China.
A potential reciprocal visa exemption between Russia and India could be finalized by the end of this year, opening a new chapter in bilateral and tourism relations between the two countries.
Background and importance of this initiative
Visa-free travel has become a hot topic in recent years, particularly after the success of the visa-free group tourism program between Russia and China, which was launched on August 1 last year. Inspired by this initiative, Russian and Indian leaders are now considering a similar arrangement.
Currently, India and Russia already have a partial exemption in place. It applies only to diplomatic passport holders for up to 90 days. The exemption also extends to spouses, children, and dependents of these passport holders, provided they hold valid diplomatic, service, or official passports. Nationals participating in bilateral cooperation projects may obtain multiple-entry visas valid up to five years, for the duration of the project.

Consultations and negotiations
Formal discussions are scheduled to begin in June during strategic meetings such as KazanForum 2024. Representatives from both countries will work on practical agreements aimed at implementation by the end of the year.
June will be crucial as the first official exchanges on the draft agreement take place. These consultations will focus on defining the precise terms that will bring this visa liberalization into effect.
