Namibia Imposes Visa on 31 Nationalities Due to Lack of Reciprocity
Namibia is introducing visa requirements for nationals of 31 countries that do not offer reciprocal visa-free entry to Namibian citizens, aiming to restore diplomatic parity while maintaining its reputation as an open and welcoming tourism destination.
In response to the lack of reciprocity in visa policies, Namibia will begin requiring visas from citizens of 31 countries, a measure aimed at restoring diplomatic equity. The new policy is expected to take effect shortly.
Until recently, many travelers could visit Namibia without navigating bureaucratic hurdles — as the government granted visa exemptions to numerous nationalities. However, fewer than half of the countries benefiting from these exemptions reciprocate Namibia’s policy for its citizens, prompting the government to reassess its approach to immigration. At the same time, officials continue to expand the number of entry points eligible for visa-on-arrival.
Committed to Diplomatic Fairness
Namibia’s objective is to ensure balanced and equitable interactions with other nations. By imposing entry visa requirements on citizens of countries that do not offer similar privileges to Namibians, the country seeks to level the diplomatic playing field. The move has been confirmed and endorsed by the Cabinet after being approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Security, and Protection (MHAISS).
Which Nationalities Are Affected?
The following 31 nationalities will soon need to obtain a visa to enter Namibia: Germany, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belarus, Canada, Denmark, Spain, United States, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, Norway, Uzbekistan, Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine.
These travelers — once able to enter Namibia visa-free — will now be subject to the country’s updated rules, with full details to be announced soon.
How to Apply for the Visa
According to MHAISS, citizens of the listed countries will still be able to receive a visa on arrival, provided they complete an online application in advance. A processing fee will apply. Full details of the application process will be published in the coming weeks through official diplomatic channels.
Online Application Process
The application process is intended to be simple and accessible. Travelers will need to:
Complete the online visa application before departure
Submit required documentation, including a valid passport, passport photo, and travel booking details
Pay applicable visa fees at the time of application
Upon arrival in Namibia, visitors must present their application confirmation and pay any remaining visa fees to complete entry into the country.
While some have expressed concerns that the new visa requirements may deter visitors, Margaret Kalo, Director of Public Relations at MHAISS, emphasizes that the change will not undermine Namibia’s welcoming spirit. As she notes, the country remains committed to providing unique and memorable travel experiences to all who explore its natural wonders.
