Nigeria to Sanction Airlines Transporting Passengers Without Valid Visas

Nigeria’s Interior Minister warns airlines transporting passengers without valid entry visas, landing, or exit cards will face penalties, as new e-Visa and entry/exit card requirements take effect.

Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has warned that airlines transporting passengers to Nigeria without valid entry visas, landing cards, or exit cards will face sanctions. This announcement was made during a sensitization program in Lagos focused on the implementation of the electronic visa (e-Visa) system and new landing and exit cards.

Sensitizing All Stakeholders on New Entry Requirements

The minister emphasized that Nigeria will not serve as a testing ground and no foreigner will be admitted without a visa. While acknowledging that the e-Visa simplifies entry, he stressed that national security remains the top priority. He called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to strengthen awareness and strict enforcement of the 2025 visa policy, reminding airlines of their responsibility to national security and interest.

The Director General of the NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, welcomed the introduction of the e-Visa and new entry and exit cards, calling them a major step toward aligning Nigeria with international best practices and enhancing the traveler experience. Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, urged greater inter-agency cooperation to ensure the success of these reforms and strengthen border security.

E-Visa and Entry/Exit Cards: What Travelers Need to Know

Dr. Tunji-Ojo clarified that presenting a flight ticket or payment proof is no longer sufficient for travel to Nigeria. He noted this aligns with requirements in countries like the UK, the U.S., and Canada, and will now be strictly enforced. The minister also highlighted the streamlined process for obtaining e-Visas and landing and exit cards, aimed at welcoming investors.

Since the e-Visa launch on May 1, more than 5,800 applications have been received, with the vast majority approved. However, he confirmed that visa issuance remains subject to conditions.

Travelers can apply for an e-Visa and entry/exit card through the official government portal.
